December isNational Impaired Driving Prevention Month. Founded by Ronald Reagan in 1982, the month is dedicated to increasing awareness of impaired driving, and decreasing the number of injuries and deaths as a result. Before you venture out onto the roads this holiday season, take precaution and keep the message of National Impaired Driving Prevention Month in mind.

How Big is the Problem?

Almost 30 people die every day due to drunk driving accidents. That amounts to approximately one every 51 minutes. Each year on average, more than 10,000 people die due to drunk driving. Alcohol-related crashes cost an average of $59 billion annually.

What Can I Do To Help?

The best way anyone can help curb impaired driving is to not contribute to the problem. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following:

• Prior to any drinking, designate a non-drinking driver when with a group.

• Don’t let your friends drive impaired. Take their keys away.

• If you have been drinking, get a ride home or call a taxi.

• If you’re hosting a party where alcohol will be served, remind your guests to plan ahead and designate their sober driver; offer alcohol-free beverages; and make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.

Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by keeping these tips in mind and promoting the message of National Impaired Driving Month.
