All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

5 Questions to Ask About Motorcycle Insurance

Get your motor runnin’, head out on the highway—but not without motorcycle insurance! Having the proper insurance coverage can give you the peace of mind to thoroughly enjoy your ride. So how much coverage do you need? It varies. You can customize your motorcycle policy just like you’d customize your bike itself. Getting the right coverage is easy once you know what questions to ask. Here are a few to get you started:

  1. What does my state require? Similar to auto insurance, most states require you to have a minimum amount of liability coverage for your motorcycle. While you’ll probably want more coverage than the minimum, it’s good to know the legal requirements for motorcycle insurance.
  2. What more do I need? Collision, comprehensive? Collision and comprehensive cover damage to your motorcycle from an accident or from an event such as fire, theft or vandalism.
  3. Are custom parts and accessories covered? How about safety apparel? Standard coverage may not include custom parts and accessories. If you’ve spent a lot of time customizing your bike, you may want to buy optional coverage. That said, some policies do include coverage for damaged or stolen safety apparel, such as helmets, jackets, boots and gloves, at no extra cost.
  4. Is roadside assistance available? Roadside assistance typically covers towing to the nearest qualified repair shop, along with other basic emergency services.
  5. What discounts are available? Many insurers offer a discount for bundling policies, so be sure to ask—especially if you already have auto or homeowner’s insurance policies. You also may be able to save money on your premiums if your motorcycle is stored in a garage, if you belong to certain rider groups, or if you have taken a safe rider course sponsored by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
