Labor Day Safe Driving Tips

This Labor Day weekend is slated to be one of the busiest travel holidays yet, with an estimated 35.5 million Americans hitting the road. Unfortunately, this means it is also one of the most dangerous times on the road. The National Safety Council estimates 405 traffic fatalities this Labor Day weekend. To keep you and your family safe this holiday weekend, here are some safe driving tips:

Leave Early. Aim to leave half an hour to an hour ahead of your desired departure time, and factor in any traffic that you may encounter.

Plan Your Route. Look for alternate routes, program your GPS or use a map to get you where you need to go as fast and efficiently as possible.

Pay Attention. Most accidents are caused by inattentive drivers. Drive alert and exercise extreme caution at all times.

Wear Your Seat Belt. It is estimated that 148 people may survive collisions this weekend because they will have worn safety belts.

Enforce a Distraction-Free Zone for Drivers. This includes cell phones and other devices.

Don't Drive While Impaired. If you're tired, sick, or have been drinking, either let someone else drive or postpone driving.

Stay safe as you embark on that final summer trip. Happy Labor Day!
