Ah, the holiday season. It’s a time for celebrating with friends and family, and for many people, that means driving long distances. With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, let’s take a look at  some holiday driving safety tips to help you remain safe while on the road:

Keep Your Vehicle in Good Running Condition

Start out with a full tank of gas, check the tire pressure, and make sure your windshield fluid is full. Keep a snow brush or scraper in your car at all times. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, check your exhaust pipe to make sure that it is clear, and never warm your car in an enclosed area.

Follow the Rules of the Road

Buckle up. Observe the speed limit. Stay in the proper lane. Don’t text and drive. Leave more distance than usual between your car and the vehicle ahead of you, so that you have adequate time to stop.

Slow Down

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lists “driving too fast for conditions” as one of the most frequent driver behaviors. Winter weather is already upon us, and conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Accelerating, stopping, and turning all take longer on snow-covered roads. In addition, many holiday drivers find themselves navigating unfamiliar roads, so make sure you give yourself enough time to reach your destination.

Don’t Drive While Impaired

Thanksgiving statistically has more drunk driving fatalities than any other holiday. Don’t drink and drive.  Use a designated driver.

Stay Well-Rested

Driving while overtired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Make sure that you are alert while driving. Stop frequently, and rotate drivers if necessary.

Double-Check Your Car Insurance Policy

Whether you are driving your own vehicle or a rental, make sure that your auto policy coverage is updated and accurate. For more information about car insurance, contact The Reis Group today!
