Warm weather is finally here, and you’re ready to take the boat out on the water. Is your boat ready, though?
Even if you’ve properly stored and cared for your boat over the winter, there’s still a lot that needs to be done before you go out on your local waterways. Most of your attention will be on the boat itself, but there are other things—such as the trailer, registration, and watercraft insurance—to consider as well.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
Engine and Electric
- Make sure fuel hoses are not soft, brittle, or cracked.
- Check system for leaks or damage
- Check all other belts, hoses, and cables. Replace if needed.
- Check electrical connections for corrosion and make sure your battery is holding a charge
- Check all fluid levels and change as needed
- Test for proper ventilation
Propellers and Hulls
- Inspect propellers for dings or distortion, and make sure the bearings are not worn out
- Inspect hulls for blisters or cracks
Trailers
- Inspect the grease fittings on the hubs and reapply grease as needed
- Test the lights
- Ensure that your vehicle’s jack will work to lift the trailer, and that you will be able to loosen and tighten the wheel lug nuts in case of emergency
Safety
- Make sure that you have enough life jackets for each potential passenger
- Check for a fire extinguisher. It should be the correct classification for your boat.
- Check for working navigation lights
- Review your insurance policy
